ANTIQUE AMERICAN CHESTNUT

The Cadillac of antique woods, American Chestnut is a very rare material. Longleaf does not grade Chestnut as strictly as we grade our Heart Pine due to the rarity of the material and the generally small sizes of reclaimed timbers. The general appeal of Chestnut is its high degree of "character", and typically our Chestnut is rustic in character.

Chestnut varies a great deal in color. It can be as dark as chocolate or as light as latte.
Worm holes are present in varying degrees, as are knots and nail holes. We allow drying
checks on occasion, and we often "mend" boards. Mended boards may contain "butterflies",
plugs or "Dutchmen". The wider the planks, the more likely they are to be mended. The narrower the planks, the more homogeneous the overall floor will appear.  Wide planks visually "read" as very distinct units.

Lengths: Usually 1' to 12' (occasionally longer).
Widths: Usually 2-1/2" to 8-1/2" tongue and groove. 9"+ square edged (call for availability).
Thickness: 3/4"

ANTIQUE EASTERN WHITE PINE

Like chestnut, white pine can be found in both board and beam form. Our resawn eastern white pine is referred to as "pumpkin pine". Pumpkin pine is the vernacular term used to describe the reddish-orange heartwood of truly old growth white pine. White pine flooring is traditionally milled with square edges, not tongue and groove. Relatively soft, white pine was widely used as flooring on less trafficked upper floors of houses in the past.

Salvaged White Pine Boards
Thickness: 3/4"
Widths: 4" - 14" (sometimes wider)
Lengths: 4' - 14' (sometimes longer)
Characteristics: Occasional nail holes, light checking possible, knots in varying amounts
and color variation from light blonde to darker chestnut tones.

Pumpkin Pine

Resawn from large timbers, this material has occasional nail holes, some surface checking, and knots of varying sizes. The tone of this material matches the flooring which was widely used in turn of the century homes across the American Northeast. Widths range from 4"-13" depending on the beam stock available. Lengths are generally 2' to 14'.

ANTIQUE RED AND WHITE OAK

Longleaf does not grade our antique oak as strictly as we grade our heart pine. The range in this product is extremely wide in both sizes and character: It can be milled from both boards and beams. Material can exceed 20" in width and can range in color from bright to black. The finished flooring, which we keep in inventory, is usually a mix of red and white oak, but we can provide all white oak floors at our customers' request.

Longleaf only bothers salvaging oak which is quite old and has taken on "rustic" qualities such as darker tone to augment its tight, old-growth grain structure. Expect some drying checks, especially in wider planks, nail holes, bug tracks, some knots and wide color variation. Our wider planks may have "mends" (butterflies, plugs, and "Dutchmen"), which adds to the hand-crafted quality of these floors.

Lengths: Usually 2' to 12' (occasionally longer).
Widths: Usually 2-1/2" to 8-1/2" tongue and groove.   9"+ square edged (call for availability).
Thickness: 3/4".
